The Big Pink @ King Tut’s 14/10/2009

The Big Pink are undoubtedly rock ‘n’ roll, they appear tonight drenched in strobe lighting and sporting all black followed by a blaze of hype, like some elite gang. The massive attention the band have been receiving comes rightfully after their appearance on recent UK Guitar Hero adverts, as well as the upcoming support slot with prog rock behemoths Muse who themselves graced this very venue almost 10 years ago (scary).
Support tonight comes from Glasgow based synth pop four piece Findo Gask whose array of splendidly arranged pop gems could put a shimmy into the most static person’s step. We strongly urge that you catch them during their monthly residency, Crufts at Nice ‘n Sleazy’s. The next Crufts, coming up this Saturday, also features splendid local talent courtesy of Copy Haho and North Atlantic Oscillation.

Still the Pink is the reason why Tut’s is jammed packed full tonight. The band’s branch of electro rock can be easily appreciated by everyone from hardcore alt rock aficionados to pop chart devotees. Cruising through a short yet thoroughly packed set opener ‘Too Young To Love’ has a swagger that sees the London four-piece assured confidence open proceedings nicely, you get the feeling they know they are set for imminent stardom, no bad thing!
The band’s second single, the dream like ‘Velvet’ is arguably the set’s standout as it manages to sound warm through layers of feedback. While the track most of the crowd have been waiting for, the Guitar Hero featured ‘Dominoes,’ is left ’til last, and justly so as the capacity audience erupt into Glaswegian choruses of ‘these girls fall like domin-oh-ah-oez’ and the band revel in their hit rightfully knowing they have a weapon in their artillery which is quite quickly blasting them into the eye of popular culture.

The Big Pink’s debut album ‘A Brief History Of Love’ is available now. If you have been lucky enough to capture a Muse ticket for the SECC next month, make sure you get down their early to catch what may be the future of indie rock.
